(Fort Collins, CO) – Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project announced they will release their first two bottled beers, Pure Guava Petite Sour and Wild Wild Brett “Rouge” on Thursday August 11th.
UPDATE: From Brewer/Owner, Chad Yakobson, “We are awaiting shipping of the labels from the label company. Our labels were finished late last week and all design was done by graphic designer Travis Olsen.” Full beer descriptions have been attached below.
Here’s the run down…
750 ml bottles of Pure Guava Petite Sour and Wild Wild Brett “Rouge” will make their debut at the bottle release party held at funkwerks brewery tap room in Ft. Collins CO. starting at 6PM on Thursday, August 11th. This is the first of many bottle releases from Crooked Stave as we look to roll out with plenty more barrel-aged sour, specialty release and funky Brettanomyces beers. Also available on draft for the releases will be a single keg of Crooked Stave’s Good Glory, a beer brewed exclusively for Euclid Hall Bar and Kitchen in Denver, CO. as well as Wild Wild Brett and Petite Sour.
The bottles of Pure Guava Petite Sour have been quietly conditioning since May 23rd awaiting their release. This refreshingly tart, spontaneously soured, rustic wheat beer, brewed with the addition of oats and spiced with coriander and sumac, was fermented entirely in our distinct oak foeder. Pure Guava is an unfiltered, golden wild ale with tropical fruit aromas and bright citrus flavors created by a proprietary Brettanomyces strain. This will be the only time Pure Guava is released, as each Petite Sour will change to reflect the seasons it is brewed and the mischievous minds of our brewers.
The anxiously awaited first release from the Wild Wild Brett R&D series is over! Historically considered ”wild yeast”, Brett is responsible for 100% of the fermentation in each installment of the series, which looks to play off the colors of the color wheel for ingredients to match with the different strains of Brett. This first installment of the series, dubbed “Rouge”, incorporates hawthorn berry, rose hips and whole hibiscus flowers in an unfiltered, slightly tart wild ale. Rouge pours a reddish hue delivering soft floral aromas and tropical fruit flavors with a tart earthy finish.
With only a little over 100 cases of each bottled, we expect bottles won’t last too long. Not able to make it to the release? Never fear we have made sure to save away some cases for a few of our favorite liquor stores throughout the Denver metro and Colorado front range areas.

Pure Guava Petite Sour
Wild Ale brewed with spices

Deviating from conventional brewing methods and inspired by historic brewing techniques, we created our Pure Guava Petite Sour. This refreshingly tart rustic wheat beer, brewed with the addition of oats and spiced with coriander and sumac, was fermented entirely in our distinct oak foeder. Pure Guava is an unfiltered, golden wild ale with tropical fruit aromas and bright citrus flavors created by a proprietary Brettanomyces strain. This beer is bottled with the natural yeast, if cellared in a cool dark place it will develop more complex Brett characteristics and evolve for years to come. Drink as you would a wheat beer, cloudy with the yeast in suspension. Please enjoy this unique offering in your favorite stemmed glassware and allow the beer to breathe and open up as you swirl it in your glass. Visit us on the web for more batch release details.
Thoroughly chill and open carefully, slowly degassing the excess CO2 built up from the active yeast.

(Boulder, CO) – Here is the lowdown on the Avery Meretrix release.
Per a recent newsletter…
BREWERY ONLY RELEASE
She’s patiently awaited you for two years. Aging gracefully in beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon barrels and accompanied by sour cherries, your Meretrix is eager to serve.
Meretrix will make her debut at a bottle release party at the Avery Tap Room and Barrel-Aging Cellars at 5PM on Saturday, July 16th. We’ve instituted a number of new policies to ensure that all in attendance have a remarkably fun and positively memorable experience! Here goes:
Numerous Tap Room servers will be on hand to serve guests–in the line–as they wait. We’ll also have our 10-tap kegerator full of small-batch and barrel-aged oddities from the tap room like Eremita (our Tap Room only sour blend), Dry-Hopped IPA, Mai Rye Bock etc.
A DJ will be spinning an eclectic mix of tunes for the crowds.
Once a substantial line has formed, our staff will be giving tickets–each good for the purchase of 1 bottle of Meretrix–to those in line. The number of tickets we hand out will be EXACTLY the number of bottles that we have to sell. This way, if you show up late you will know immediately whether you are in time to get bottles.
Limit of 4 bottles per customer.
First come, first served.
CASH ONLY! CASH ONLY! We will have an ATM on site in case anyone forgets this advice. Note that the cash only rule will make the whole process MUCH faster for all involved!
55 cases for sale = 1320 bottles = 4 bottles per customer = 330 customers who get Meretrix (assuming all purchase the 4 bottle limit). Please plan accordingly.
The beers in our Barrel-Aged Series are a celebration of the passion and effort that our brewers put into Avery beers, and we want the release of these beers to be equally fun! (Portland, ME) – Allagash Brewing will release the three Coolship beers in bottles this summer…
…a “limited amount” as confirmed by Brewmaster, Jason Perkins. Perkins didn’t specify whether an announcement would be made but did tell Esquire Magazine a couple weeks ago that the “final product” will be available at the brewery this month. They will be packaged in 375ml bottles.
The three beers are Coolship Red, Coolship Resurgam and Coolship Cerise. For more info on these brews, head over to the Simply Beer site (he got a sneak peek last year).

(Kansas City, MO) – Boulevard Brewing said today that it failed to tell consumers that a batch of its Smokestack Series Imperial Stout showed a form of bacteria known as Brettanomyces before it was released.
…I’m not sure how an Imperial Stout shows traits of Brettanomyces without some kind of infection though it isn’t clearly spelled out in the brewery’s letter below. In any case, the brewery is offering a refund though this is not technically a recall because it’s not a harmful bacteria. Here is the letter/instructions in full:
————————————
The 2011 Limited Release of Smokestack Series Imperial Stout has recently been the subject of some consumer comments and forum postings. We’d like to take this opportunity to explain what happened, and to offer monetary relief to any dissatisfied consumers.
Prior to the March release our tasting panel sampled several bottles of the new barrel aged beer. Some turned out as expected, while others displayed the unique characteristics of wild Brettanomyces yeast. We immediately posted tasting notes to our blog, announcing the deviation and noting the differences in flavor profiles. Because our tasting panel very much enjoyed both versions, we decided to proceed with the release as usual.
It is Batch #2 of the 2011 Imperial Stout that exhibits the Brettanomyces trait. In retrospect, we should have called attention to this Brett character on the label. Because we didn’t, and because some consumers got a beer that was different from the one they had a legitimate right to expect, we’re offering a refund to anybody who feels shortchanged, and who can reasonably demonstrate that they did in fact buy a bottle of Batch #2 of our 2011 Imperial Stout.
Batch information is located on the back label of the bottle, in the upper right-hand corner (click here to view image—batch number is indicated by the number “2” at the end of the top line.). To receive a full refund, please send us the name of the store where you purchased the beer, the purchase price, your name and mailing address, and one of the following:
• The actual front and back labels removed from a bottle of 2011 Imperial Stout, Batch #2
• A scan or photo of the front and back labels from a bottle of 2011 Imperial Stout, Batch #2
You can e-mail this information to refund@boulevard.com or mail it to “Imperial Stout Refund, Boulevard Brewing Company, 2501 Southwest Boulevard, Kansas City, MO 64108.” You should expect a check within 2-4 weeks of your submission.
We apologize for any confusion or dissatisfaction. Thanks to everyone who shared comments or concerns. We sincerely appreciate your support, and we pledge to learn from our mistakes. If you have any additional questions about this release, or any other Boulevard offering, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

(Dexter, MI) – Got a couple press releases in my inbox last night. I’ve combined them here…
On Monday, April 25, Jolly Pumpkin will release its long-anticipated Biere de Mars Grand Reserve – available in both Ann Arbor and Traverse City starting at 4pm.
The story behind the Sour Flanders ales Biere de Mars and Biere de Mars Grand Reserve is that both are brewed with identical recipes, using two different yeasts. Each is then aged – or mellowed – in different oak barrels for about four months before being reblended back together for bottling. The Grand Reserve, however, is aged for over a year in the barrels before being reblended and bottled – making it even more sour.
Only 20 cases of 330ml bottles of the Grand Reserve will be available, with a limit of two (2) bottles per person which will sell for $10 per bottle. An even more limited number of 750ml bottles will be available, in Ann Arbor only, for $20 per bottle.
Monday, April 25, is a busy day for Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, with the release of Bambic – brewed as a 25th Anniversary celebration ale for Winking Lizard Tavern.
Bambic is a blend of Bam Biere – a farmhouse style ale and Lambicus – our Lambic beer, fermented with 100% wild Dexter yeast. The 330ml bottles of Bambic will sell for $8 at Jolly Pumpkin in Ann Arbor and Traverse City, as well as at any of the 14 neighborhood Winking Lizard Taverns located throughout Ohio.
The Jolly Pumpkin is part of Northern United Brewing Co., which also encompasses the Grizzly Peak and North Peak Beer Co. craft beer brands, as well as the soon-to-be-released Civilized line of spirits. NUBC’s philosophy focuses on a dedication to conservation, inspiration and locally sustainable practices. All of the beers and spirits under these brands are produced at either the new 5600-square-foot facility on Old Mission Peninsula adjacent to Mission Table restaurant (former Bowers Harbor Inn) or at the original Jolly Pumpkin brewing facility in Dexter.
Find NUBC products at stores, restaurants, and bars all throughout Michigan, including: North Peak Brewing Company, Mission Table & Jolly Pumpkin Brewery, all in Traverse City; Jolly Pumpkin & Grizzly Peak, in Ann Arbor.

(Pleasantville, NY) – Per today’s newsletter, there is some new stuff coming from Captain Lawrence…
Here’s the update:
The Picnic table is back in business…..
Rosso e Marrone – Batch# 3
This is the third edition of our Gold Medal winning American Sour Ale. Put into the barrels in May of 2008 where it slowly aged for over a year with Brettanomyces before we added in freshly crushed Merlot and Zinfandel grapes. Another year and half in the barrel and it was finally ready to go. The flavors are funky, with notes of rich red grapes and oak with a nice sour twang. This is one of my favorite to date.
Production: approximately 1250 bottles
Packaging: 375ml bottles
Price: $15 / per bottle
Limit: 6 per customer
Release Date: Saturday, April 16th – 11:00 am
We are going to use the same procedure as we have in the past. We will put out the ticket counter at some point the night before. Grab a ticket and be on line at 11:00am for the release. Getting a ticket does not guarantee beer, but we should have enough to go around. We will not be selling on line, over the phone, or reserving bottles for people, so if you want beer you have to show up on the 16th.
See you on the 16th.
We hope to have these beers ready to go sometime before July, but as we all know with the barrel aged beer, the beers tells you when they are ready, not the other way around. As details and release dates are available we will post them and send out an email.

(Pleasantville, NY) – A few new approvals from Captain Lawrence Brewing.
A while back, Captain Lawrence got approvals for its first beer in the Barrel Select Series, a beer called American Sour Ale aged in oak barrels. Now there are two more coming in the series, American Sour Ale with raspberries and American Sour Ale with cherries. These beers have been in the barrel for over four years according to the labels.
The brewery also got approval for a Saison, dry-hopped with U.S.-grown hops.
All three beers will be packaged in 750s (and the Saison recently got draft approval).

(Bloomington, IN) – Upland Brewing flipped the switch at noon.
Online Reservations for the upcoming release of Upland’s Cherry and Blackberry Lambics open today at 12pm on uplandbeer.com. [ed. note: almost 3pm but still appears to be open.]
Each person is able to reserve one bottle per style, and bottles will be available for pickup at our Bloomington Tap Room and Indy Tasting room from March 29th through April 12th.
Reservations for our last release in December 2010 lasted approximately 18 hours, with reservations coming from across the country.
Upland currently makes nine styles of sour ale. Eight of them are Belgian-style lambics, to which whole fruits are added while the beer is aging in oak casks. The ninth style we produce is Dantalion Dark Wild Ale. Like our lambics, this sour ale is aged for approximately a year-and-a-half in oak casks, but it features a special blend of spices rather than fruit.
For more information about our sour ales and the process we use to make them, visit our website.

(Bloomington, IN) – Some news regarding Upland Brewing‘s Lambic program…
Here’s the newsletter update:
Upland’s Blackberry and Cherry Lambics will be available for online reservation beginning at noon on Wednesday, March 16th. Just visit uplandbeer.com and follow the link on the the reservations page. Due to limited supply, reservations will be limited to one bottle of each style per person. Each bottle is $20 + tax.
You’ll be able to pick up your bottles from our Bloomington Tap Room or Indy Tasting Room from March 29th through April 12th. That’s right, unlike previous releases, you’ll be able to choose whether to pick up your Lambics in Indianapolis or Bloomington!
As before, someone else can pick up your bottles for you, but they must show a copy of your ID.
There is no set time that reservations will close – we’ll keep it open until we run out. But don’t wait too long. Reservations closed after only 18 hours last time, and we have even fewer bottles this go-around…

(Portland, OR) – Honestly, most folks that frequent this site have probably sought something much more risqué than this on the internet at some point but…
…the “peak” traffic time here is during work hours so I know people typically visit from their cubicles. Hence the warning.
Anyway, Upright Four Play is going to be released on March 20th according to @LawTheo. Click the image above for a peak at the label and/or re-visit last year’s risqué label.
Description for last year’s beer: “Four Play is a Belgian-style sour beer that has been aged since March of 09 in Pinot Noir barrels with an addition of cherry puree, lactobacillus and brettanomyces to sour and dry out the beer. It is very tart, dry and complex with wine-like subtleties of oak, pinot, wheat and sour cherries.”
