Retired baseball slugger has new namesake beer

big-hurt-beer-575

(Chicago, IL) – Seasoned baseball fans will remember The Big Hurt, Frank Thomas.

It is amazing how fast time flies and Frank Thomas, not long ago one of the heavy hitters in baseball, is now 43. So what do you do in your post-baseball years if you are Thomas?

Make beer. Or at least have it made it for you.

The Chicago Tribune reported a couple weeks back:

The Big Hurt’s new product — a namesake lager — is expected to arrive in Chicago-area bars and liquor stores in August. And at 7 percent alcohol, Big Hurt Beer — like its bat-wielding inspiration — also promises to be a hard-hitting presence in the city.

“I’m very picky when it comes to beer,” said Thomas, who described the brew as light and crisp. “It’s a very good-tasting beer.”

Label approval (a keg collar) came in this week revealing that Big Hurt Beer will be brewed at Minhas Craft Brewery in Monroe, Wisconsin.

The company is surprisingly mum on details around the beers hitting shelves given we are coming up on late August. Updates will be posted to Facebook, Twitter and the company’s website.

Thomas hit 521 home runs in his career and won back-to-back MVP awards. There has been some debate as to whether he merits being a first-ballot hall of famer. He is eligible beginning in 2014.

Goose Island to split 312 Urban Wheat brewing duties with Anheuser-Busch

§ July 29th, 2011 § Filed under News § Tagged , , Comments Off

goose-island-logo-cropped

(Chicago, IL) – A couple noteworthy changes were announced by Goose Island today…just four months after the announcement of AB InBev‘s purchase of the brewery.

The changes as outlined by the original The Chicagoist report include:

1) “outsourcing the remaining brewing of Honkers Ale and India Pale Ale to Red Hook Ale Brewing, with locations in Portsmouth, NH, Seattle and Woodinville, WA”

2) “brewing of 312 Urban Wheat ale will be split between Goose Island’s Fulton Street brewery and an Anheuser-Busch brewing plant in Baldwinsville, NY”

CEO, John Hall, told multiple outlets that this meant the return of Christmas Ale, Nut Brown Ale and expansion of barrel aged and sour ale projects.

AB CEO, Dave Peacock, said at the time of the purchase announcement that A-B would not brew Goose Island beers in St. Louis but he apparently never ruled out New York.

Earlier this month, it was reported that AB InBev was trademarking area codes that could potentially be used in local-themed beers similar to 312 Urban Wheat.

Upland Brewing to invest $3 million in expansion

§ July 26th, 2011 § Filed under News § Tagged , , Comments Off

upland_brewing_logo

(Bloomington, IN) – Upland Brewing Company has acquired a 47,000 square foot building near downtown Bloomington and begun applying for regulatory approval to re-locate its production brewery to the new site by January 2012. The 1.8-acre location at 301 West Grimes Lane sits directly adjacent to the City’s B-Line Trail and the railroad switchyard targeted for a new city park. The company’s Tap Room restaurant will remain at the current 11th Street site, where a smaller pilot brewing system will be installed to develop new specialty beers.

Upland will spend $1.5 million to acquire and renovate the building and another $1.5 million over the next 3-5 years to expand and upgrade brewing, fermentation and packaging equipment. As a result of the investments, brewing capacity will more than double from 11,000 to 25,000 barrels (a brewer’s barrel is equivalent to 31 gallons). The company is also prepared to increase and accelerate its investment to beautify the building and site and is seeking economic development assistance from the City for infrastructure costs required for basic brewery operations in order to do so.

On Wednesday, August 3rd, 5:00 – 7:00, Upland will host an open house at the new facility for the public to see the space and review drawings and site plans.

To commemorate the official opening of the B-Line Trail later this summer, Upland is hosting the inaugural “B-Line Twilight Trail Run and Shindig” on October 29th, the proceeds from which will be donated to the Bloomington Parks Foundation. The evening run will start at their 11th Street location, which sits at the north end of the B-Line Trail, pass the new Switchyard Brewery location, and finish with a local music festival.

Half Acre Beer Co. reveals Captain Fantasy, Dripping Saison projects

(Chicago, IL) – Half Acre Beer Co. announced the upcoming release of two saisons yesterday.

(Photo Credits: Phineas X. Jones on Flickr / Creative Commons)

Here are the details courtesy of the brewery blog:

We just scored some Saison yeast so we’re brewing two back to back Saisons — the first is a draft only beer called Dripping Saison. This is aimed at a core Saison to aid us all in gliding through the summer season with a stable go-to session anchor. We took a bit of it and roughed it up with some off-beat treatment that may or may not eek it’s way out to you, but the bulk will be poured into growlers at our store.

The second Saison is part of a two-part double brew with our friends from Short’s Brewing in Bellaire, MI. For the first half we hit the road and brewed it in MI at their facility this past Monday. The second will be brewed this Friday here on Lincoln Ave before heading out to the My Morning Jacket show.

The beer is called Captain Fantasy. We’re brewing identical recipes at each location with two separate labels of our own interpretation. Captain Fantasy is a Saison brewed with pears and Sorachi Ace hops. The beer should be pleasantly off kilter and our time with Short’s is always time well spent.

Captain Fantasy will be available in 22′s and for growler pours.

Three Floyds Amon Amarth Ragnarok, Arctic Panzer Wolf now available

§ June 8th, 2011 § Filed under News § Tagged , , , , Comments Off

three-floyds-arctic-panzer-wolf

(Munster, IN) – Quick update from Three Floyds Brewing

I sent over an email earlier to Three Floyds’ Lincoln Anderson inquiring about 22 oz. bottles for Amon Amarth Ragnarok and Arctic Panzer Wolf. Here’s what Anderson said:

“Amon Amarth Ragnarok is out now as a brewery only release. Panzer is available now and I’m hoping to see Zombie Dust art finished soon with perhaps bottles in the fall.”

The first beer is named after two metal bands (Amon Amarth and Ragnarok).

Artist, Tim Lehi, created the labels for both beers as well as Blackheart. Lehi posted up a bottle pic of the two beers on his blog last week. A close-up of the carnage on the AAR label can be found here. Lehi also does some nasty tattoos.

Here’s the old Arctic Panzer Wolf label from last year.

Goose Island recalls three batches of Sofie due to variable taste profiles

§ June 2nd, 2011 § Filed under News § Tagged , Comments Off

goose-island-logo-cropped

(Chicago, IL) – Goose Island Beer Co. made an announcement on its website today…

…but nothing on Twitter or Facebook yet…hmm. Below is the full text.

—————————————————

Goose Island Drinkers,

Goose Island has decided to withdraw three batches of bottled Sofie Belgian Style Ale from the marketplace, packaged on 2/11/2011, 3/8/2011, 4/20/2011. The 2/11/2011 batch is 650ml bottles, the 3/8/2011 and 4/20/2011 batches are 4 packs.

During a routine tasting at our brewery we discovered a bottle of Sofie that had flavor attributes that were different than expected. We found the flavors associated with these samples could be variable from bottle to bottle within these 3 production batches. Some of the bottles in each batch are outside of our desired taste profile.

Brewing Sofie is a complex process that blends barrel aged beer with fresh beer. We have found the root cause of the flavor variation. It was from some of the aging barrels and we have implemented a method of controlling this variation in the future. The beer is perfectly safe to drink, but it doesn’t meet our strict quality standards and requirements for taste.
We deeply appreciate the trust you put into Goose Island and we thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Brett Porter
Brewmaster
Goose Island Beer Company
