Drinkin the Sunbelt

A star-studded Saturday batch of new beer labels…

New Belgium BELGO IPA: Is that a disco ball? Looks like this beer is graduating from the Lips of Faith Series and becoming a more regular offering in 12 oz. bottles.

Bell’s Golden Rye Ale, Quinannan Falls Special Lager Beer: New approvals for 750ml bottles

Stillwater Rule of Thirds: #4 in the Import Series, this one is a hoppy tripel brewed at Sint Canarus in Belgium / 11.2 oz bottle, 8% ABV

Deschutes Chainbreaker White IPA: Interesting to see Deschutes doing a White IPA outside of its collaboration White IPA with Boulevard Brewing…they’ve also trademarked the name, “Chainbreaker,” for beer and I wonder if they may consider bottling something as a regular or seasonal offering down the road? Keg only approval for now.

Two Brothers Hop Juice Black Double IPA: Interesting timing (copied from yesterday). Per Two Brothers’ festival site, “This year at the Hop Juice Festival you will have the opportunity to try a Two Brothers Brewing Company festival exclusive beer: Hop Juice Black. This slightly more aggressive dark version of our classic Hop Juice Double IPA will be available in extremely limited amounts. June 18th will be your only opportunity to purchase 22oz silkscreened bottles and taste it on draft throughout the day.”

Drink’in the Sunbelt: Collaboration brew between Mikkeller and Texas-based Jester King Craft Brewery. This is a hoppy wheat beer to be packaged in 750s.

Conflux Series meets Collaboration Series with Boulevard, Deschutes’ White IPA

Bend, Oregon’s Deschutes Brewery and Kansas City, Missouri’s Boulevard Brewing Company collaborate on a White I.P.A.

(Bend, OR) – Deschutes Brewery and Boulevard Brewing Company today announced that they will release two versions of a new collaboration beer later this summer. The style, which is described by brewmasters Steven Pauwels of Boulevard and Larry Sidor of Deschutes as a White I.P.A., combines Boulevard’s expertise in making Belgian-style witbiers with Deschutes’ mastery in brewing hop-forward ales. The ale will be made at both breweries and released simultaneously throughout each of their distribution territories.

“To say we’re excited about working with Deschutes on this project would be an understatement,” said Pauwels. “We have a lot of respect for Larry and his team, and we look forward to sharing our knowledge with them through the collaborative process.”

Pauwels and Sidor began exploring the idea of brewing together after crossing paths several times at craft beer events around the country. The brewers discovered they had much in common in their brewing philosophies, both pushing the envelope whenever possible, yet remaining dedicated to the time-honored traditions that keep them consistent and grounded.

“It will be interesting to see how similar the brews turn out despite being brewed more than 1,600 miles apart,” said Sidor. “That’s part of the fun of working together with a brewery like Boulevard. We both use the latest technologies but also stay true to traditional brewing ingredients and methods.”

Despite both beers being characterized as White I.P.A.s, there will be differences in packaging and in how they will ultimately taste. Brewed at their Bend, Oregon facility, Deschutes’ version will be the second beer in their new Conflux collaboration series and will be distributed throughout their 18-state region in kegs and 22-ounce bottles. Their first collaboration, brewed with Hair of the Dog Brewing Company, is still aging in wood barrels.

Boulevard’s version, christened Collaboration No. 2, will be distributed throughout their 20-state region as part of the Smokestack Series seasonal lineup in kegs and 750ml bottles. The brewery’s first collaboration, a partnership with distinguished Belgian brewer Jean-Marie Rock, was released in January of 2010.

White IPA: Boulevard, Deschutes collaboration beer revealed and a Missouri update

§ April 22nd, 2011 § Filed under News § Tagged , , , , , , , , , Comments Off

smokestack-no-2

(Kansas City, MO) – Some Deschutes Brewery news that is of particular interest to those in Missouri…

Boulevard Brewing and Deschutes Brewery are known to have been collaborating on a beer recipe. Earlier this week, KC Beer Blog got hold of a sales sheet with information regarding their project:

Boulevard Brewing Company and Deschutes Brewery are jointly crafting a beer described as a “White I.P.A.,” slated for release in Summer 2011. Combining Boulevard’s expertise at making Belgian-style witbiers with Deschutes’ skill at brewing hop-forward ales, the beer puts a new spin on the idea of collaborative brewing. Working from a single recipe, brewmasters Steven Pauwels of Boulevard and Larry Sidor of Deschutes are producing two separate beers, more than 1,600 miles apart.

Pauwels and Sidor first began exploring the idea of working together after they frequently crossed paths at the craft beer events around the country. The two have much in common in their brewing philosophies, each pushing the envelope whenever possible, yet remaining dedicated to the time-honored traditions that keep them consistent and grounded.

Despite the beers’ shared recipe, each of the two versions will develop a distinct, unique identity, to be reflected in their naming and packaging. Boulevard’s half of the equation, christened Collaboration No. 2, will be distributed throughout their 20-state region in kegs and 750ml bottles, as part of the Smokestack Series seasonal lineup. Brewed at their Bend, Oregon facility, Deschutes’ effort will be the second beer in their new Conflux collaboration series, and will be distributed throughout their 18-state region in kegs and 22-ounce bottles.

Deschutes Digital Marketing Manager, Jason Randles, clarified that the Conflux beer with Boulevard will actually be the first release in their new collaboration series. The first collaboration beer they brewed was with Hair of the Dog but that will be released sometime in the future as the second beer.

Randles also said that Deschutes will launch in Kansas City and the western half of the state in June. In July, Deschutes will launch in St. Louis and the eastern half of the state. Contracts with distributors have not yet been signed so Randles declined to comment any further.

Deschutes is aiming to release the first Conflux beer in July.

Deschutes Brewery expanding capacity

§ March 15th, 2011 § Filed under News § Tagged , , Comments Off

deschutes-brewery-logo

(Bend, OR) – Deschutes Brewery today announced that it has finalized plans to expand its brewery headquarters in Bend, Oregon. Due to customers’ continued consumption of the brewery’s damn tasty beers, Deschutes plans to add 6,750 square feet to its production facility, which will include five new shiny fermentation tanks and a fresh remodel of the tasting room and gift shop.

“Demand is rising in our local market and among our loyal fans in the states where we sell our beer,” said Gary Fish, president and founder of Deschutes Brewery. “This expansion is an investment in our future to make sure that we are ready for the increased demand.”

Specifically, this project will create a new building to house the fermentation tanks, a new two-story building to house future processing equipment, an electrical control room and new restrooms and showers for the staff. The expansion will allow Deschutes Brewery to brew an additional 105,000 barrels per year, along with enhanced processes to continue ensuring beer quality and consistency. This will be the first phase in a two-phase expansion. The second phase will take place in several years and include five more fermentation tanks.

Water and energy efficiencies are built in to the new design, including the installation of a continuous use cleaning system and the addition of a water re-use tank which will save thousands of gallons of water and energy per year. Additional sustainability features include a heated warm rinse tank, which will save hot water and steam for tempering tanks between cycles. The brewery will continue with designs to capture CO2 from the fermenting process and decrease waste to the City sewer system.

Local firms BBT Architects and R&H Construction are designing and building the project, and Walker Structural Engineering is completing the structural design. Construction on the space is slated to begin mid-May 2011 when engineering is complete, and will be finished in mid-2012. Visitors will still be able to easily access the brewery for tours, tastings and merchandise during the construction process.

Bend, Oregon Brewery Introduces Black Butte Porter and Mirror Pond Pale Ale to the Mount Rushmore State

(Bend, OR) – Deschutes Brewery, Oregon brewer of courageously crafted ales since 1988, announced today that it will begin selling Black Butte Porter and Mirror Pond Pale Ale in South Dakota this week. Partnering with Dakota Beverage, one of the most influential and successful distributors in its region, Deschutes Brewery will be initially be focusing in the Sioux Falls, Brookings, Yankton and Vermillion areas. This will be the 17th state to carry Deschutes products, and the brewery’s first new expansion for 2011.

“Like most people in the country, South Dakotans continue to look for greater variety and access to quality beer as they become more and more educated about craft beer,” said Bill Christensen, general manager for Dakota Beverage. “Allowing a greater number people to enjoy the added dimension that we can bring to their craft beer experience has always been part of our plan, and we are continuing to develop that by working with Deschutes Brewery.”

Black Butte Porter, the nation’s number one selling craft porter, will be available to South Dakotans in 22-ounce bottles and on draft. For those who view dark beer with suspicion, this deep, satiny brew dispels the myths and creates enthusiasts. Black Butte Porter has won many awards over its 22 year history and recently won a bronze medal in the brown porter category at the 2009 Great American Beer Festival.
Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Deschutes Brewery’s most popular beer, will also be available in 22-ounce bottles and on draft. With its definitive hop aroma and hop forward flavor, Mirror Pond is the quintessential pale ale. A consistent award-winner since its debut in the early 1990s, this deftly balanced ale most recently was recognized with a gold medal at the 2010 Great American Beer Festival, the beer’s second medal in a row in this esteemed competition.

Deschutes The Stoic joining Reserve Series lineup this spring

§ February 2nd, 2011 § Filed under News § Tagged , , , , , Comments Off

deschutes-brewery-logo

(Bend, OR) – Deschutes Brewery‘s 2011 lineup will include a new offering.

In addition to the tip sheet info attached below, I asked Digital Marketing Manager, Jason Randles, for some extra info on Stoic and the Hair of the Dog collaboration. Here’s his response: “The Stoic is our next Reserve Series beer that we hope to release to the public in April. If we hear back from the TTB in time we will have some draft available at a kick-off party during CBC in San Fran. The Stoic is a Belgian-Style Quad brewed with Pomegranate Molasses and aged in Rye Whiskey & Oregon wine barrels. The beers we brewed for the Hair of the Dog Collaboration are still aging in a variety of oak barrels so we do not have a release date, name or description for that beer yet.”

The Stoic

When: April
What: Reserve Series (22-ounce wax-dipped bottles and draft)
The newest beer to join our coveted Reserve Series, this brew is so new that we can’t even really tell you about it yet. Actually, it’s top secret until a sneak preview during Deschutes Brewery Base Camp Week in San Francisco during the Craft Brewers Conference. Want to find out more about this philosophical beer? We’ll see you in San Francisco!

Where: Very limited, available in most states where Deschutes is sold

Twilight Summer Ale

When: Available May to September
What: Summer Seasonal (12-ounce bottles and draft)

As the summer days stretch into night, Twilight Ale comes to celebrate the long lazy hours. It’s a lighter, yet full-flavored ale with an attractive aroma. A complementary malt presence imparts just enough tension to its refreshing, crisp, dry profile. Signature Amarillos make Twilight something best enjoyed chilled and savored outdoors.

Where: Available in all 16 states where Deschutes is sold

Beer Geek Information:
5.0% Alcohol by Volume (ABV)
35 International Bittering Units (IBUs)

Hop in the Dark – Cascadian Dark Ale

When: Available May – September 2010
What: Bond Street Series (22-ounce bottles and draft)

Over the past year, no style has received more attention than the Cascadian Dark Ale, or Black IPA. Accolades abound for Deschutes Brewery’s take on this movement: Hop in the Dark ranked in the top 10 beers of 2010 by Modern Brewery Age; and top 25 beers of 2010 by both Draft Magazine and Wine Spectator.

We love this description given to Hop in the Dark by Imbibe Magazine: “A year of experimentation created this raven-colored ale that, due to a quartet of hops – Cascade, Amarillo, Centennial and Citra – packs an intensely pungent IPA bouquet. The malt profile is smooth, with a gentle touch of coffee to temper the citric bitterness.” Raven-colored ale? It’s poetry! We think you’ll agree when you take the plunge – a hop, if you will – into this year’s Hop in the Dark.

Where: Available in all 16 states where Deschutes is sold

Beer Geek Information:
6.5% Alcohol by Volume (ABV)
75 International Bittering Units (IBUs)

Deschutes Mirror Mirror 2009 Barleywine infected with Brett

§ February 1st, 2011 § Filed under News § Tagged , , , Comments Off

deschutes-mirror-mirror-09

(Bend, OR) – Deschutes Brewery recently announced a quality issue with Mirror Mirror 2009 bottles.

The brewery blogged yesterday:

We have detected in our lab a similar condition to The Abyss 2009 where some (not all) of the bottles have brett in them. It is interesting in that there seems no way to tell short of general tendencies in storage conditions where the brett will develop to sensory detection levels.

At Deschutes Brewery we take these things seriously. We know many of the wine barrels we use will have brettanomyces (wild yeast that produces flavors that are not desired in some beer styles) in them (just ask any winemaker). Going forward, we have purchased a flash pasteurizer and all beer from barrels is now pasteurized (killing the brettanomyces) before it is blended with beer from tanks (that is not pasteurized). Then the final blend is bottle conditioned so all beer is alive when you get it. 2010 The Abyss was treated this way.

As for the Mirror Mirror or 2009 The Abyss, we will refund and arrange shipment for unopened bottles back to the brewery. As with any of our beers if someone has an unsatisfactory experience, we will make it right. Unfortunately, we cannot compensate for above market pricing paid over the internet or other “extra-market” sources, nor can we send a replacement beer in lieu of payment. Suffice it to say, however, we stand behind our beer and the experiences we deliver. You can contact us directly through our website.

Deschutes Twilight Ale available this month

Deschutes Brewery Releases Popular Summer Seasonal, Twilight Ale

April 7, 2010- Bend, Oregon– Deschutes Brewery releases its super sessionable summer seasonal, Twilight Ale, this month. This crisp and effervescent ale makes summer barbeques, trailhead gatherings, outdoor concerts and the like even more outstanding. Twilight Ale is perfect to enjoy just as the sun sets during those extended summer evenings.

While staying true to its roots, the Twilight Ale packaging has a slightly different look this year. The evolution includes a larger “window” to display the artistic interpretation of Smith Rock State Park, a world-class rock climbing destination not far from Deschutes Brewery headquarters. Yes, Twilight Ale is releasing a little earlier than usual this year (it usually hits the shelves and taps in May) because Deschutes’ spring seasonal, Red Chair NWPA, sold out in record time.

Twilight Ale is a straw-colored ale with a vigorous hop essence and a subtle, wafer-like body that complements the flavor of this special seasonal brew. It is a unique blend of four hops and malts: Cara-Pils and Carastan malts with the late addition of whole flower Amarillo, Cascade and Tettnang hops.

Deschutes Brewery’s Brewmaster, Larry Sidor, said, “Mother Nature has been good to us by giving us an exceptional harvest of Amarillo hops this year so Twilight should be doubly delicious.”

So start sipping the sunshine a little early this year by drinking some Twilight Ale and make some magic happen with a beer that’s brewed just for the long, lazy days of summer.

Twilight Ale will be available from April until September in 6-packs, 12-packs and on draft.

Beer Geek Information:
5% Alcohol by Volume (ABV)
35 International Bittering Units (IBUs)

Beer-Food Pairing:
The brewery team recommends pairing Twilight with picnic classics such as barbecued chicken and potato salads.
