Carlsberg workers striking because they can’t drink all day

§ April 8th, 2010 § Filed under News § Tagged , , , , Comments Off

Occasionally, we’ll have a beer or two with lunch. (We do work at a beer magazine, after all.) On Tuesday, for example, we went to Rosamunde in San Francisco to get a burger but had to wait 40 minutes for it to be ready. (Well worth the wait.) Toronado happens to be next door, so one thing led to another, and we found ourselves sipping on a Racer 5 while we enjoyed an excellent half-pound slab of chuck. Of course, we limit our drinking during the day — on the rare occasions when we partake in a pint or two — to lunch.

Right, so where does that leave us? Ah, yes, Denmark. Workers a Carlsberg brewing facility staged a walkout after the company decided to limit beer drinking to the lunch hour. According to the story, drivers (drivers!) believe they deserve to drink three beers outside the lunch hour, and workers at the plant want the same privilege. Management decided this might not be a good idea, and the underlings are angry so 800 of them walked out of work. Straight to the pub, ya’ll!

London cans its Pride

One of the world’s oldest brews is jumping on one of craft beer’s newest trends. Fuller’s London Pride will soon be available in 11.2 oz cans.

The storied pale ale from across the Pond was previously served in glass bottles and 16.9 oz aluminum packages, but the brewery bent to consumer demand and released its wonderful, warming liquid in smaller vessels.

There’s also financial logic behind the decision:

“And distributors know, nearly twice as many cans can be shipped over bottles for the same price,” Jeff Coleman, president of Paulaner HP USA, the official U.S. importer of Fuller’s, said in a release. “With the soaring cost of fuel and freight, today’s can technology and the added quality protection cans provide from UV light over glass bottles, import beer in cans has become and will continue to be very fast growing segment of the import category,”

Welcome to the can-volution.

Australia considers banning pool cues from bars

§ January 29th, 2010 § Filed under News § Tagged , , Comments Off

A year after the State Government in Queensland, Australia banned glasses in some pubs, there’s a movement afoot to eliminate pool cues as well.

According to a local news source, the devices have become drunken patron’s “weapon of choice” when attacking paramedics.

Um, what?

Kroy Day (real name!), a member of the Liquor Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union, found that 94 percent of the 142 medical workers he surveyed say they have been attacked at some point in the past five years while on the job. That would be significantly higher than the percentage of beer bloggers that report being assaulted.

The best beer store in the world

§ January 29th, 2010 § Filed under News § Tagged , , , Comments Off

That would be Vintage Estate Wine and Beer in Boardman, Ohio.

The shop, which boasts over 800 bottles and 12 taps, came in second last year but took the top spot in Ratebeer.com’s annual best beer store list. It beat out last year’s winner, Denmark’s Ølbutikken.

“This is huge,” owner Phil Reda told 33 WYTV. “It’s like the gold medal of Olympics.”

Reda’s establishment took second place in 2009, but upped the ante during the past 12 months by adding more brew and building a tasting lounge. Aggressive. We like.

Alright, who’s been to Vintage? We want details, people.

Get the soccer ball rolling with a Budweiser

§ January 28th, 2010 § Filed under News § Tagged , , , Comments Off

If you were hoping to drink a craft beer at the soccer stadiums during this summer’s World Cup, you’re out of luck. Once again, the King of Beers will be the only brand available at the matches.

“Budweiser will be available as imported beer for the 2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa, and just like our successful involvement with Fifa World Cup over the last two decades we look forward to once again having the opportunity to satisfy the tens of thousands of attending fans,” Eelco van der Noll, a spokesman for the company, said.

At viewing parties outside the stadiums, however, fans will be able to drink a “no-name brand beer” that’s rumored to be provided by SAB Miller. To be honest, this sounds a bit terrifying, but we’re sure it’s good. Also, from first-hand experience, we can say there’s nothing quite like taking in a U.S. soccer match while drinking a Bud. Stars and Stripes forever.

Solving the great Super Bowl beer dilemma

§ January 28th, 2010 § Filed under News § Tagged , , Comments Off

The Super Bowl is rapidly approaching, which means Super Bowl parties are just around the corner. (You start yours on Wednesday, right?) Regardless of when yours kicks off, you’re going to need beer. Lots of beer. But what kind should you buy?

Well, according to marketing research firm Mintel, 44 percent of beer drinkers want a domestic beer as opposed to 24 who prefer imported booze and just 13 percent who go for craft.

And you know what? That’s just fine with us. Buy a 30 of Budweiser for the masses and get a couple sixers for you and your guests with, um, more refined taste.

Bloggers help bust beer thief

§ January 12th, 2010 § Filed under News § Tagged , , Comments Off

We’re so proud of our Internet brethren.

After two teenagers stole beer from a garage, the neighborhood blogosphere went on high alert. The pair was apprehended and police Capt. Mike Schwartz credited a couple blogs for raising the alarm. As a result, Brian Tilton and Stephen Corliss face “felony burglary for entering the city residence to commit a crime.”

Bloggers, proving once again that real work can be done from the basement of your parent’s house.
