Beer City USA poll kicks off on Tuesday

§ April 30th, 2012 § Filed under News § Tagged Comments Off

Online voting starts Tuesday for the national Beer City USA Poll, and three-time winner Asheville — one tie and two solo wins — has to be considered a strong candidate for a fourth consecutive victory.

This would be a solid traffic generator for CraftBeer.com. Always wondered why Charlie Papazian ran it on Examiner.com instead.

Law outlawing Postal Service booze shipments dates back over 100 years

§ April 30th, 2012 § Filed under News § Tagged Comments Off

The Senate passed a bill that would allow USPS to ship alcohol on Wednesday…

Private carriers like UPS and FedEx have shipped booze for years, but the post office has been constrained by a law that’s been on the books since before Prohibition. For legal nerds, the regulations can be traced back to Section 217 of 18 U.S.C. 1716(f) of the Act of March 4, 1909, ch. 321, 35 Stat. 1131, according to the post office’s legal department.

Sixpoint Apollo Summer Wheat cans have arrived

§ April 30th, 2012 § Filed under News § Tagged , Comments Off

(Brooklyn, NY) – Sixpoint Brewery announced the launch of Apollo Summer Wheat today. The text below comes from this morning’s email blast.

The last time we launched a new beer, we dissected and glorified the hop cone. As many have noticed over the years, Sixpoint has a fascination – bordering on obsession – with hops. Today we are happy to announce a complete change of pace. We are offering you an entirely new canned creation brewed with finesse and subtlety. The secret and story in this beer is not within the hops, but instead within the yeast.

Apollo is the first-ever summer installment in our seasonal can rotation, and a new style for the brewery as well. In a white can to reflect the sun as well as nod to one of its main ingredients, white wheat, this ale is a clear, bronze-hued elixir to cool down those oncoming scorching days and sweltering evenings.

The inspiration for Apollo came from a land that is very dear to beer. Over the past few years, we’ve traveled to Bavaria several times to experience again the truly golden qualities of their weizens, or wheat ales. A collaboration between Sixpoint Founder/President Shane Welch and Sixpoint Braumeister Jan Matysiak, a German native and Weihenstephan Institute alumnus, the recipe was developed over many tastings and tourings around Bavaria, and put into action back home. Using an ancient Bavarian wheat ale yeast and a 50/50 ratio of wheat malt to barley malt, Apollo ale pays homage to its tried-and-true roots while offering a twist on tradition.

A Warning about Dogs and Hops

§ April 30th, 2012 § Filed under News § Tagged , Comments Off

beer and dogs

Sponsored Guest Post:

Here at Northern Brewer we love dogs just about as much as we love brewing (maybe more). For many years, dogs accompanied their owners to work at Northern Brewer and freely roamed our offices. And for many of us, brew day is a wonderful opportunity to spend time with our canine friends. So when we heard about a customer’s scary experience after their dog consumed hops we were shaken and wanted to help. For wider education on the issue, we would like echo a very serious warning about dogs and hops.

Though research is not extensive, ingesting hops can be highly toxic to some breeds of dogs (Golden Retrievers and especially Greyhounds have been documented). There are many scary stories on homebrewing forums about dogs eating hops after unsuspecting brewers left unused hops out in a place accessible to their dog, or dumped their kettle trub and hop sediment into the yard, or had a hop plant in their yard that dropped cones on the ground. Some dogs that ingest hops rapidly develop a condition called Malignant Hyperthermia, in which the body temperature rises uncontrollably. This can be very harmful or fatal to the dog. Some symptoms are restlessness, panting, vomiting, abdominal pain, seizures, rapid heart rate, and high temperature. If a dog has possibly ingested hops and exhibits symptoms, they should be taken to an emergency pet hospital immediately for treatment.

This abstract from the National Institute for Biotechnology Information represents one of the few scientific confirmations of the issue, and this page has a record of one homebrewer’s experience (their dog was fortunately saved).

Keep your dogs safe!
